Track and Swim Teams Compete at 2005 GA State Summer Games

The delegation from Rockdale County joined over two thousand athletes from all over Georgia to compete at the 2005 Georgia Summer Games held at Emory University. The competitions lasted three days.

The track team Coached By Rachel Fisher and Versie Slay included Kenny Brown, who won a gold medal in the shot put and bronze medal in the 100m dash; Timothy Rogers, who won a bronze medal in the shot put and placed fourth in the 100m dash; Diamone Cook, who won a bronze medal in the 100m dash and took fourth in the shot put; George Burnett who won a silver medal in the 100m dash and bronze medal in the shot put; and Matasha McCrary, who won a silver medal in both the 100m and shot put.

The Rockdale Sharks Special Olympics Swim Team coached by Daryl Shadrix, Tom McPike, and Chris Hoffman took seven swimmers to the games. Bethany Beech, who won a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 25m freestyle; Jack Bowers, who won a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke and took sixth place in the 50m freestyle; Melissa Hoffman, who won a gold medal in both the 50m freestyle and 25m backstroke; Nathan Hurst, who won a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and gold medal in the 50m backstroke; Missy Rascoe, who won bronze medal in the 25m freestyle and took fourth in the 50m freestyle; Randy Oakes, who won a silver medal in the 50m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle; and Ryan Shadrix, who won a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke and a gold medal in the 100m freestyle. The Sharks 4x25m freestyle relay team made up of Randy Oakes, Nathan Hurst, Jack Bowers, and Ryan Shadrix won a gold medal. In the qualifying heats they established personal best times and then came back to lower their personal best times during Saturday's competition.

Rockdale County Special Olympics is very proud of all our athletes who took part with such enthusiasm, team spirit, and pride.
